Cocktail Moments

“Twas a woman who drove me to drink, and I never had the courtesy to thank her for it.” W.C. Fields

A Martini Moment

Known as The King of Cocktails President FDR welcomed the end of prohibition in 1934 by drinking a martini.
Steve Acres prefers to mix a martini this way:

1) chill glass
2) place lots of ice into a shaker
3) add ½ oz. of vermouth and 3 oz. of Onilikan gin
4) swirl in shaker, let it rest for a couple of minutes, add the olives to the chilled glass and pour. Sip and savour.
5) a party for two? Double the amounts.

A Margarita Moment

“Once upon a time in Mexico…someone invented the margarita. Or did they? She’s from Mexico, Señores, and she is lovely to look at, exciting and provocative.”

Steve Acres prefers to mix a skinny Margarita this way:

1) chill classic/skinny glass
2) place lots of ice into a shaker
3) it’s a 3/2/1 – depending on how many Margaritas you are mixing: 3 Onilikan blue agave spirit (or your favourite tequila) 2 of Controy (or Cointreau) and 1 of freshly squeezed lime juice
4) swirl, rest. Salt the rim of the glass (wet with a little lime juice) add fresh ice to the skinny glass and pour. Sip and savour.

A Mazatlan Moment

“As the name suggests, the popular drink was developed right here in Mazatlan to celebrate the climate, culture and spirit of this place we love.”

Steve Acres prefers to mix a Mazatlan Cocktail this way, this is for a party of two:

1) chill glass
2) place lots of ice into a shaker
3) add 3 oz. each of Onilikan Agave Liqueur and Onilikan Mango Liqueur
4) swirl, rest, add fresh ice to glass. Add a twist of orange peel into the glass and pour. Sip and savour.

Alcohol may be the road to nowhere, but at least it’s the scenic route.

(Who the heck is Steve Acres? He’s one of the several Canadian investors in the local Mazatlan micro distillery Onilikan (in the Nahuatl language, onili = liquer, kan = place.) There are also Mexican investors, a truly CanMex venture employing Mexicans year round. The Onilikan store is located in the Golden Zone on Plaza Gaviotas #505 and is open Monday to Friday from 8:30 to 5 p.m. and on Saturdays from 8:30 to 2 p.m. The store sells many other special products such as salts, chili pepper, vanilla, eggplant, mole, mango and a product aptly named “other delights.” Call ahead for a personalized group tour: 669 668 2370, land line 913 5038.Onilikan was nominated in the silver category for the most innovative 2016 product by the Canacintra business organization, which is 70 years old. They didn’t win, but the Onilikan is on Canacintra’s radar; perhaps next year.)
